Taking Chances : Experimental Drawing

Taking Chances : Experimental Drawing

September 22nd - 28th September 2023

This drawing workshop will utilize various materials to realize work from quick, gestural studies to fully developed pieces. The class emphasis is on experimentation, expressing personal vision and taking chances without concern for likeness or reality of the image. Exploration of ancient northern Mayo sites on a field trip and Irish poetry will serve as jumping off points to inspire work.

Students will work with various methods and materials such as charcoal, graphite, pigment sticks, water media, peat, monotype printing, plaster, ink and collage to develop work that echo’s each participant’s aesthetic interest and vision. Power point presentations will be given to illustrate examples of how drawing and mixed media are used by contemporary artists. There will be daily exercises to promote creative thinking and subconscious direction. Artists will have daily access to the current exhibition at Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Art and full access to the studio space.

There will be a small materials and field trip fee. All levels of experience are welcome in this class.

The 5-day workshop is being taught by artists Amy Metier and Jeffrey Hirst, each of whom are experienced teachers and resident fellows at Ballinglen Arts Foundation.

This Workshop takes place from the 22nd - 28th  September 2023. The cost is $1,600 which includes tuition, shared cottage with private bedroom for 5 nights, lunch/dinner/dessert/tea/coffee, collection/dropoff to the bus/train stations in Ballina, full use of the Dolan/Maxwell Library facilities 24/7.
