Shaping Place: Mixed Media in Sculpture and the Art of Momigami is a 4-day workshop taught by Crystal Marie: October 29 - November 1, 2025.
Step into an immersive journey with artist Crystal Marie, where sculptural forms emerge through paper and mixed media. This workshop is an act of both intuition and discovery—shaping terrains that echo the ground we walk upon and the contours of one’s own body.
Topics Covered In This Class
Learn Crystal’s innovative techniques for transforming paper into sculptural forms, opening possibilities for creative exploration through the ancient Japanese art of hand-kneading paper, known as Momigami, in combination with contemporary mixed-media practices.
With Crystal’s guidance, students will translate these concepts into free-standing sculptures, objects, and wall-mounted works, incorporating materials as varied as textiles, found objects, encaustic wax, plaster, rust, and more.
Over four days, techniques and demonstrations will unfold layer by layer, supporting participants in developing their ideas into dimensional works with both material depth and visual impact.
Student Supply List:
Most supplies are provided by the instructor and studio host, though students are encouraged to bring materials to personalize their designs.
A special note for allergy concerns: Latex balloons will be used as a temporary supports for some design options.
Basics: Scissors, craft knife, ruler, protective eyewear, disposable gloves, old yogurt or quart size container with lid, a box or container to transport your sculptures after the class.

About Crystal Marie
Crystal Marie considers herself to be “a material girl” when it comes to her art practice, which is rooted in collage. Evolving to include three-dimensional sculptures and assemblages, Crystal’s work speaks to both physical location and identity. Her process begins with an experimental approach, allowing what she’s brought to the table to inform her decisions as she builds layers of texture and meaning.
A Chicago based mid-career artist currently residing in Kansas City, Crystal Marie has one book published on the art of collage and is writing a second book about overcoming the blocks commonly encountered in the studio. Crystal has exhibited her work in many fine art exhibitions and solo shows, earning her gallery representation and the coveted 2018 Racine Art Museum Artist Fellowship.
