Jeffrey Hirst - Experimental Drawing - Grand Marais Art Colony

  • Grand Marais Art Colony 21 West Highway 61 Grand Marais, MN US (map)

EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING

Jeff will guide students to  utilize traditional and non-traditional materials to realize work ranging from quick studies to fully developed pieces. Emphasis will be on experimentation, expressing personal vision, and taking chances without concern for the likeness of the image. Exploration will include references to Lake Superior in and around Grand Marias, literary prompts, and the use of the local Northshore landscape as jumping-off points for inspiration. Students will work with various methods and materials, including charcoal, graphite, water media, ash, carborundum, plaster, building materials, ink, R & F Drawing Sticks, and collage, to develop work that reflects each participant’s aesthetic interests and vision. Hand monotype printing processes will be included in creating work that leads to unpredictable discoveries, opening the door to new possibilities. PowerPoint presentations will illustrate how contemporary artists use drawing and mixed media and daily exercises will promote creative thinking and subconscious direction.
