Hirst, carborundum print on found material, 2023

Carborundum printing—a process that uses silicon carbide grit to create textured, tonal plates. This process is celebrated for its painterly, sculptural qualities. Over the course of the workshop, participants will work with a variety of substrates, including acrylic plates, to build multilayered images and develop complex visual relationships across multiple plates.

Monoprinting methods will be integrated throughout the workshop to expand the possibilities of mark-making, color, and composition. Participants will print with Akua intaglio and liquid pigment inks, learning how to combine transparent and opaque color systems to achieve depth and luminosity. Multiple registration strategies will be introduced to support accurate, stress-free printing.

Although the workshop offers substantial technical grounding, the focus remains on personal vision. Artists will create, build, and rebuild printing surfaces as they push their imagery forward. Sketchbooks will be used for rapid studies and idea development, while prompts and demonstrations will support experimentation and discovery. Jeff will also share visual resources and process presentations to deepen understanding of the medium.

Expect to:

  • Learn how to build carborundum plates using silicon carbide grit and various substrates

  • Develop layered imagery using both carborundum and monoprint techniques

  • Explore transparent and opaque color systems with Akua inks

  • Practice multiple registration methods for aligned, consistent prints

  • Use sketchbooks for idea generation and mark-making exploration

  • Receive individualized guidance while creating a series of experimental, expressive prints

  • Work in a supportive environment designed to encourage risk-taking and creative growth
